Are wardrobe boxes worth it?

Straight answer: for hanging clothes, yes. For anything folded, no.

What a porta robe actually saves you isn’t space — it’s time at both ends. Without one you take everything off the rail, fold it, box it, then unfold and re-hang it all at the other end, and iron a good portion of it. Suits, dresses, coats and business shirts all arrive creased.

With one you lift a section of rail across, close the box, and reverse it in the new place. Ten minutes a wardrobe instead of an afternoon.

Where it’s not worth it: t-shirts, jumpers, jeans, socks, anything that lives folded in a drawer. Those go in a tea chest ($4) and stay perfectly happy. Buying portarobes for folded clothes is just paying $16 for a $4 box.

One per metre of hanging rail is the rule. Walk to the wardrobe, measure how much rail is actually full, and count from there — most people have less hanging than they think.

Using one properly

• Assemble it where it’ll be packed. Full of clothes it’s awkward, not heavy — carry it empty to the bedroom first.
• Don’t overfill. Cram the rail and the bar bows and clothes crush against each other. Leave a little air.
• Use the floor of the box. Shoes, handbags and belts sit under the hanging clothes — free space you’ve already paid for.
• Keep it upright in the truck. Laid flat, everything slides into a heap at one end.

What it costs

$16 each with the hanging bar included. Worth checking that last part when you compare — some places quote the carton and sell the bar separately.

The alternative, honestly

Some people run a heavy-duty garbage bag over a bunch of hangers and tie it at the neck. It’s free and it half works — it keeps dust off and holds the hangers together. What it doesn’t do is stop the clothes creasing or protect them from being squashed under something in the truck. For a short local move with hardy clothes, it’s a legitimate way to save $16. For suits, dresses or anything you’d take to a dry cleaner, it isn’t.
